The entry into force of the combined provisions of Annex VI to the MARPOL Convention 78/78 and of Directive 2012/33 / EU, which will bring the limits relating to the sulfur content of fuels to 0.50% overall and to 0.1% in ports and ECA areas. Things are already set and there are two short-term alternatives: new fuels derived from petroleum obtained with processes similar to those used for the production of diesel fuel for transportations and / or for mixing low-sulfur fuels (or none at all, like HVO) with more sulphurated distillates; installation of smoke treatment plants on board (scrubber.) However, the transition process will be complex, due to the high cost expected for the first solution, and to foreseeable management problems in the second (waste and sludge management). In the longer term, the most accredited alternative remains the LNG, although it requires the development of a storage and supply infrastructure that should also be as widespread as possible. It seems that the Italian ports have definitely decided to take this route.

Main Topics:

  • Market forecasts for the availability and costs of low-sulfur marine oil fuels in the post-2020 scenario
  • Refining or mixing or both? Technological and commercial challenges and opportunities
  • Technologies and convenience over the entire life cycle of the sulfur scrubber option
  • Maritime use LNG
  • The technologies and means of the cryogenic supply chain and of the fumes treatment plants (scrubbers)
  • Tax aspects of technical choices
  • Fill me up: new fuels logistics
  • Where to put residues: the reverse logistics of scrubbing
  • Owners’ short- and medium-term strategies
  • Segments and experiences
  • Current projects for LNG supply, storage and distribution infrastructures in Italian ports
  • Installations serving the inner harbors logistics
